EMOTIONAL AND EVALUATION POTENTIAL OF DIMINUTIVE WORD-FORMATION SUFFIXES IN MODERN UKRAINIAN CHILDREN’S PROSE

Abstract

Introduction. The study focuses on complex categories that are inextricably linked, complementing each other – emotionality and evaluation, their functional differences were mentioned; lexical units with emotionally-evaluation semantics were analyzed, which were formed by the suffixes of diminutivity; the typology of lexical-semantic groups of diminutive derivatives was singled out; outlined the range of word-formation suffixes, capable to perform emotional and evaluative functions, their priority place in the system of means of expressing the language of contemporary Ukrainian prose works for children was determined.
Purpose. The purpose of the paper is to thoroughly analyze the emotionally-evaluative function of word-formation suffixes of diminutivity and pettiness in the works of contemporary Ukrainian children’s authors.
Methods. Using the methods of functional analysis and quantitative calculations, the wordformation specificity of the idiolect of contemporary children’s writers has been established.
Results. The undisputed dominant in a number of word-formation suffixes involved in the structuring of nouns with diminutive meanings used in modern children’s prose was determined. Among the nouns-implementers of diminutive semantics, the leading place belongs to the names of objects, persons, and other beings, motivated by lexemas of the male and female gender. In addition to these derivatives, high-quality adjectives, as well as adverbs, are involved in the formation of expressive coloring.
Conclusion. It is found out that in the modern Ukrainian children’s discourse derivatives with the significance of diminutive and tenderness dominated by. This is due to the search for a foundation for the verbalization of emotional and evaluative semantics, due to which there are various and rather subtle expressive shades that accompany and express the language of children’s literary works.
A characteristic feature of the writer idiostyle of contemporary Ukrainian children’s authors is the organic use of nouns, adjectives and adverbs with word-formation suffixes – the expressions of objective diminution, diminution and pettyness, and only pettyness. Most of these derivatives are formed using the word-forming suffix -k-. These are deminutvs mostly of the female genus – the names of objects, persons, and other beings. The second place is occupied by nouns with suffix -as, motivated by masculine nouns. In the third place, the noun will derive the middle class with the suffixes -en'-enat-, -a / -at-, which indicate the young age of the creatures (insemination).
