The paper analyzes functional and compositional specifics of English scholarly texts. It was determined, that a scholarly text may function as a product of investigation, a source of methodology and factual information or as a positive or a negative example of an intellectual product. They clarified that maximal clarity and transparency of a scholarly text can be achieved by explicitly determined conjunctions; when the use of a great amount of conjunctions and link words, different types of attributes, attributive constructions and attributive subordinate clauses make it possible. It was proved that the use of clichés leads to recurrence of the main terms of a scientific research that assists semantic and structural completeness of a scholarly text. There were determined the main contents of a scholarly text, which had been objected with cliché expressions, especially: PROBLEM, HYPOTHESIS, SCIENCE, INVESTIGATION, DATA, METHODOLOGY, THEORY.
